Architectural Ink Self Portrait

Updated: Sep 10, 2018

Self portrait mixed with architectural influences of relevance to me

Ink with a brush on A1 paper - 2015

“Contrast is something I always tend to increase in my work. I like to accentuate outlines and shading which can sometimes be a disadvantage as it makes the outcome of my work more "cartoonised"."

This piece was completed with black ink and a brush. When i was drawing the proportions of the face, I didn’t use a mirror or photograph to reference to so the portrait was based off the feeling of my hand on my face. Working with ink and a brush created bold markings and lines which contrasted against the white background. Contrast is something I always tend to increase in my work. I like to accentuate outlines and shading which can sometimes be a disadvantage as it makes the outcome of my work more "cartoonised". My favourite feature about this piece is that my shoulders blend into the architectural bridges which could be interpreted as i’m carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. I enjoyed shaded the buildings and facial features with the ink as it was easy to vary the tones. If I were to improve this piece I would add more shading to the bricks in the background. The lower half of the piece is concentrated but the top half looks a bit empty.
